Discussion 10: Tourism

4. Is tourism good or bad for the planet? Explain.

I think tourism is not so bad for the planet so far. When we think about the future of the planet, we need to promote sustainable development. There are three main pillars of sustainability; economy, social, and environment. Tourism often brings effect on economy. For example, a lot of Chinese visit Japan for shopping, and they spend a large amount of money. Getting money from foreigners is one of the best way to get economic effects. Tourism also has a good effect on society. You may not feel bad when a lot of guests are in your hometown. There will be a connection between local people and visitors. Tourism is good for economy and society, however, I think tourism is not always good for environment. There are many famous places where have historical backgrounds or buildings. It will be difficult to protect these if the place has too many tourists. These days eco-tourism has become popular, so if everyone knows about it and use positively, tourism will be better for environment in the future.

Discussion 9: Vacation

4. Do Japanese people have enough vacation time?

Although we have a lot of national holidays and paid holiday system, I do not think Japanese have enough vacation time. Employees cannot use paid holiday system well. Every year, Japan ranks lowest in paid day off utilization rate. The rate was only 39% last year. I think that result is related to Japanese personality. Japanese are group‐minded, and sometimes it is too much. So you feel guilty when you have a paid day off. Moreover, colleagues do not feel good if you are absent a lot. You should not be able to have two or more days off with pay. Japanese government will set a new law that employees have to get at least 5 days paid off from April, 2016. However,  I prefer having a system such as Vacances that France does rather than paid holiday system.
